Start With a Free Body Diagram

Before writing equations, draw each object alone with every force acting on it and nothing else. Label gravity, normal force, friction, tension, and any applied force, and mark their directions honestly. A careful free body diagram exposes the structure of the problem and prevents the common error of inventing or forgetting a force. Most mechanics mistakes trace back to a rushed or incomplete diagram rather than to a calculation slip.

Choose a Frame, Then a Method

Pick a reference frame that simplifies the motion, often one aligned with an incline or with the direction of acceleration. Then decide your method. Force and acceleration analysis suits problems asking about instantaneous forces or constraints, while energy methods suit problems linking speeds at two positions without needing the messy details in between. Selecting the lighter method first saves time and reduces the chance of algebra errors on a crowded page.

Always Check Units

When you reach a result, verify that its dimensions make sense before trusting the number. A speed must come out in length per time and an energy in mass times length squared per time squared. A quick units check catches a surprising share of errors, including dropped factors and wrong substitutions. This habit costs only seconds and repeatedly saves marks that would otherwise be lost to an answer that is dimensionally impossible.
